UDOT Open House on Highway 89 Improvements Feb. 16 at East Layton Elementary School

Article Published 02/09/2017
The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) has initiated a State Environmental Study (SES) to identify alternatives that would improve traffic flow and safety on US-89 from Farmington north – and through Layton City -- to I-84.
UDOT will host a public open house to help gather ideas on the project on Thursday, February 16, 2017, 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at East Layton Elementary School, 2470 East Cherry Lane, Layton.
Growing traffic demand has caused the US-89 corridor between Farmington and I-84 to become increasingly congested during the morning and evening peak travel periods. Traffic studies project and increase in traffic volume with congestion worsening in the future. The SES will develop and evaluate freeway improvement options to accommodate the growing traffic demand after inviting public input.
The purpose of this study is to update the original study (1996) and perform a State Environmental Study (SES) that evaluates capacity improvement options and select a preferred alternative that meets the goals of the State Transportation Improvement Plan (STIP), satisfies the requirements of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), and obtains public support. Design alternatives and potential impacts will be evaluated and considered for this study. The SES will include a preliminary design concept for the recommended improvements. Potential environmental impacts will be documented following the requirements of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).
The alternatives will include concepts such as constructing an additional lane in each direction and consolidating access points in the study area.
The study will evaluate improvements to the existing roadway that would provide for current and future traffic demands in the region. The alternatives will be evaluated for potential environmental, social and economic impacts. The study results will be used to help UDOT plan transportation needs of the region.
The overall goal of the study is to provide a solution for adding capacity and improving operations and safety on US-89 through Davis County from Farmington to the I-84 Interchange.
