Article Published 03/13/2007

Layton – March 13, 2007

At approximately 3:30 P.M. on 3-12-07, the Layton Police Department received a report of a missing 10-year-old boy named Lucas Medlin. The boy was last seen leaving Sara Jane Adams Elementary School at about 3:25 P.M.

Lucas’ father reported him missing after Lucas did not come out of the school as usual. The Layton Police Department set up a command center at the school and began to organize a search of the surrounding areas. An “Endangered Person Advisory” and the Reverse 911 system were utilized to assist searchers in the area. Approximately 200 volunteers assisted in the search efforts, along with assistance from AirMed, Department of Public Safety Helicopter, Davis County Search and Rescue, Davis County Sheriffs Office, The Federal Bureau of Investigation, Adult Probation and Parole, and the Davis County School District.

The department received a number of tips from citizens following news broadcasts. One of those tips indicated that Lucas was scene boarding a UTA bus. With the assistance of the UTA, the bus driver for that route was able to positively identify Lucas. The bus driver said he dropped Lucas off in the Ogden area. Using that information, officers and investigators were able to locate an apartment that belonged to a friend of the family. At about 2:30 A.M. officers arrived at that apartment to find Lucas Medlin inside. Lucas was safe and alone. He indicated that he had decided on his own to travel via the UTA bus to this apartment. After being interviewed by detectives, Lucas was reunited with his father.

Layton Police Department Detectives will continue to investigate this case.
