Hunter Safety
The Utah Hunter Education Course is a minimum of 12 hours in length. Most classes run 15-20 hours. Students must attend all sessions of the class to pass. Most courses require that youngsters under the age of 14 attend with a participating adult.
The course includes instruction in: hunter responsibility, firearms and ammunition, firearm handling and safety, marksmanship and shooting fundamentals, principles of wildlife management, bowhunting, muzzleloader hunting, safety and first aid, water safety, and Utah legal requirements.
In order to pass the course, students must pass a 50 question multiple choice test with a grade of 76%, demonstrate to the instructor that he or she can safely handle a firearm through practical exercises and participate in live firing. Students must also be recommended by the instructor to obtain certification by demonstrating responsibility and the maturity to be a safe, responsible and ethical hunter.
*Hunter Safety will now include a small game license upon completion of the required course.

How to register
Step 1 ------- Obtain a Hunter Education Registration Certificate. Certificates can be purchased at any location where hunting and fishing licenses are sold. Cost for the certificate is $10.00. Certificate is required for class registration and will be collected at time of registration.
Step 2 ------- Register for class. Registration must be done in person at the Layton City Parks and Recreation Department. Registration fee is $2.00. Hunter Education Certificates are due at time of registration. Class size is limited, register early.
If course is offered online,
Step 3 ------- Complete online class work: Logon to the Utah DWR website at www.wildlife.utah.gov/huntereducation. Follow the links for "Hunter Education" and "Online Course". Complete all online class work including study material and all quizzes. Be sure to print out all 14 of your quiz results before attending the class and range day.
Step 4 ------- Attend class. Students must bring receipt from Layton City to class and range day along with all printed quizzes and materials from the online course.
If course is offered in a classroom setting,
Step 3 ------- Attend class. Students must bring receipt from Layton City to class. Attendance at all class dates listed in a given block is required.
**** Please Note: If you are not registered with Layton City Parks and Recreation, you are not signed up for the classes taught at Layton City Offices.
