Citizen's Academy
Program Overview
Law enforcement agencies around the country have adopted a proactive philosophy
to deal with crime in their communities - Community Oriented Policing (COP).
COP encourages law enforcement agencies and community residents to actively
work together in addressing public safety issues. By offering the opportunity
for citizens to become more directly involved with their local police agency
both groups are able to contribute on a larger scale, thus enhancing the
quality of life in the community. Community Oriented Policing efforts play an
important role in reducing crime in any community.
The Layton Police Department has adopted the Community Oriented Policing
philosophy and is pleased to offer the Layton community a program designed to
provide an in-depth look at the functions of our department. Our Citizens
Academy consists of a series of classroom sessions, demonstrations, and
hands-on practical exercises designed to introduce each participant to the
capabilities and limitations we have as a police department.
This will be the fifth year the Layton Police Department has hosted a Citizen’s
Academy. The goal of the academy is to continue to build upon the already
strong relationship between the community and the Police Department. Those who
attend the academy will receive classes on basic procedure, legal
procedure and criminal code, and a good overview of all the divisions and
services within the Police Department.
