Layton approves off-site data backup

Article Published 06/27/2013

The Layton City Council has approved an interlocal agreement with Brigham City to use each other’s data facilities for a backup, in case a disaster – natural or manmade -- takes down the main computer facilities of one of the two cities.

The backups will utilize a fiber line from UTOPIA, which will cost each of the two cities $50 a month.

Jim Mason, Layton City Assistant City Manager, said other alternatives to provide off-site backup for city computer data and hardware would have cost more than $1,000 a month.

The two cities are about 36 miles apart.
