Colder weather and winter is coming. Here’s a list of some of the things residents can do now to prepare for the season:
1. Turn off and drain your sprinkling system.
2. If you have an evaporative cooler, drain it and cover it for winter.
3. Unhook hoses from facets and drain them, to avoid freezing problems.
4. Consider having your furnace inspected and tuned-up for the winter season – especially if it is an older model.
5. Inspect your smoke alarms and add new batteries, if needed. Check any carbon monoxide detectors, to be sure they are working too.
6. Make sure snow shovels and ice melt are accessible. If you have a snow blower, make sure it is ready for winter usage.
7. Add ice scrapers and brushes to vehicles, so they are handy, when needed.
8. Check the tread on vehicle tires, to ensure good traction in snow and ice.
9. Be sure you have adequate off-street parking for winter. 10. Make sure all tree branches are trimmed. Trees and bushes must be cut and maintained 7 feet above the sidewalk. Trees and bushes must be cut and maintained 13’6” above the street. Remember that rain or snow may cause tree limbs to sag more than usual.
11. Strive to keep your gutter free from debris and leaves. This will keep storm water flowing smoothly.
