Update/Address Correction Structure Fire 1803 E Crestwood Street 8-8--15

Layton City Fire Department responded to a house fire locatedat 1800 E Crestwood Street on August 8th at 7:31 p.m. When fire andpolice arrived they observed fire extending from the garage with the door open.They found an elderly man 86 years of age out front. Medical crews evaluatedthis male for heat stress and smoke inhalation. He was released by the medicalpersonnel at the scene. Fire crews attack the fire in the garage and soondiscovered that an additional fire was growing in the basement area.Firefighters encountered difficulty suppressing areas in the home due to a“significant” amount of possessions. The fire was considered out within 25minutes. The Elderly male reported that he was watching T.V. in the upstairsliving room when he felt and heard a boom downstairs. He went to the basementstairs and saw smoke coming from the area and evacuated the home and called 911on cordless phone. He was offered Red Cross services but denied this and willstay with nearby family. Police and Fire investigators are continuing thismorning to establish a possible cause. They are very concerned how the fire astwo separate areas of origin. No injuries were reported to fire personnel orcivilians. Kaysville and North Davis Fire District also assisted with theincident.

Investigators have determined that the fire began in the basement and flames extended through a void space where a natural gas line penetrated through the wooden floor plate to the garage. This ignited cardboard and paper products stored directly near this flame area. Investigators are still processing what could have been the ignition source. Estimated dollar loss is 75,000 and could grow with possession loss.
