3402 - Career Ladder Promotions for Police Officers

Eligibility for Police Officer Promotions

Police Officers I and II who become eligible for career ladder promotions may receive those promotions after successfully completing length of service requirements, whether at Layton City or another similar police agency as determined by the Police Chief.

  1. The length of service requirement for a Police Officer I to be eligible for advancement to a Police Office II is two (2) years.

    Example 1.1: A new Police Officer is hired on July 1st with no experience as a Police Officer.  The new officer will begin employment as a Police Officer I and may be eligible for promotion to become a Police Officer II on July 1st two (2) years later.

    Example 1.2: A new Police Officer is hired on July 1st.  The new officer has been working for two (2) years as a Police Officer with another similar police agency.  When hiring on July 1st the officer will be given one (1) year of experience credit for the two (2) years of experience working as a Police Officer with another similar police agency.  The new officer will begin employment with Layton City as a Police Officer I and may be eligible for promotion to become a Police Officer II on July 1st one (1) year later.

  2. The length of service requirement for a Police Officer II to be eligible for advancement to a Police Officer III is three (3) additional years.

Example 2.1: A Police Officer I promoted to a Police Officer II on July 1st after working as an officer for two (2) years with Layton City.  The Police Officer II may be eligible for promotion to become a Police Officer III on July 1st three (3) years later.

Example 2.2: A new Police Officer is hired on July 1st.  The new officer has been working for six (6) years as a Police Officer with another similar police agency.  When hiring on July 1st the officer will be given three (3) years of experience credit for the six (6) years of experience working as a Police Officer with another similar police agency.  The new officer will begin their employment at Layton City as a Police Officer II and may be eligible for promotion to become a Police Officer III on July 1st two (2) years later.

The Police Chief has the right to deny a career ladder promotion to any employee if the Chief determines the employee's performance is not at a level sufficient to warrant a promotion.

At the time a Police Officer I or II meets all the requirements for a career ladder promotion, he/she must give written notice to the City.  The City shall not be responsible for any loss of pay due to the employee's failure to give written notice.  Said notice must be delivered to the Police Chief.

Eligibility for promotion will be officially verified by the  HR Division

Promotions should be scheduled to take effect on the first day of a pay period.
