Beware of storm related fraud
The recent wind storms in Layton and surrounding areas have brought communities together. There are countless stories of neighbor helping neighbor recover from the damage. Unfortunately, disasters are also excellent opportunities for criminals to prey on overwhelmed citizens.
Layton Police Department is urging people to be cautious and diligent when dealing with anyone claiming to be a roofing, siding, or general home repair contractor. Before signing any contracts, giving any money, or sharing your personal information, please verify that they are a licensed contractor in Utah. This can be done by contacting the Utah Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing at (801) 530-6628, or by visiting www.dopl.utah.gov and clicking on the “Verify A License” link. Taking a few minutes to make sure you are dealing with a company that is registered with the State gives the consumer a degree of protection and peace of mind.
The vast majority of contractors are reputable and provide quality service, but it is important to protect yourself from those who will use this opportunity to commit fraud related crimes. If you feel you have been a victim of fraud, or are contacted by someone you feel may not be a legitimate contractor, please call Layton Police Department at (801) 497-8300.
