The Layton City Attorney’s Office has been involved with each of the schools in a variety of ways. Members from this office have been guest lecturers in Civics, History, English, and a variety of other classes. They have made presentations and participated in schools’ “Career Day” programs as well. For over 15 years the office provided the “attorney coach” for Central Davis Junior High’s Mock Trial Team. During that period, the school won two State Championships and was in the final competition on two other occasions.
The legal department is involved in the cooperative measures being taken to ensure coordination with the private sector in the event of a disaster. Three members of the legal department are assigned to respond to an activated Emergency Operations Center with the remaining members standing by to be called when needed. The legal department also participates with the Police Department in its highly regarded Citizen’s Academy. The legal department also participates with and is a resource for Layton’s Youth Court.
Members of the legal department participate on various boards and committees to ensure that the City’s interests are represented. Examples are The Utah Council on Victims, Legislative Committee for the Utah League of Cities and Towns, Utah Prosecution Council, Davis County Domestic Violence Coalition, Utah Municipal Attorneys’ Association, Statewide Association of Public Attorneys, Second District Victim’s Rights Committee, Violence Against Women Act Grant Allocation Committee, etc.
